STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SAP)

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a state-required and confidential initiative that utilizes a multi-disciplinary team to assist students facing barriers to their learning.

The SAP team helps identify various challenges, including academic, social, personal, and behavioral issues, such as substance use (alcohol, tobacco/nicotine, and drugs) and mental health challenges, that may be hindering a student’s success in school. The main objective of SAP is to support students in overcoming these barriers that hinder their learning and academic performance.

The SAP team is made up of trained school administrators, educators, and staff members, along with an SAP liaison. These professionals are committed to assisting students and their families in accessing both school and community resources, as well as local services. SAP is not a treatment program. SAP does not engage in diagnosing, nor does it impose disciplinary actions. Instead, it offers intervention information to families, empowering them to make informed decisions for their students.

Referrals to SAP can be submitted by parents, teachers, staff, students, or anyone who is concerned. Students can also refer themselves if they are seeking assistance. Referral forms are available inside the Main Office, Guidance Suite, and on the school website. After filling out the referral form, it can be deposited in the locked boxes. All referrals are kept confidential, and anonymous submissions are allowed if desired.

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is not a crisis program and doesn’t provide immediate assistance. If an issue or concern requires immediate attention during school hours, please contact the School Counseling Office at 610-866-0791. After school hours, call 1-844-SAF2SAY. Call 911 for any emergency (e.g., immediate danger, being harmed, or harming others).

Concerns that warrant an SAP referral include, but are not limited to:

  • Multiple failures, drastic decline in grades
  • Withdrawing from family, friends, or activities
  • Experimenting with vaping, drugs, or alcohol
  • Sudden changes in behavior
  • Extreme sadness, hopelessness, often crying
  • Overly worried
  • Acting aggressively, irritable, seems angry
  • Defying authority at home and/or in school
  • Excessive absences
