What Makes a NHS Student?

Scholarship

Sophomores or juniors who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character.

Service

This quality is defined through voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

Leadership

A student that displays qualities of a good leader is resourceful, a good problem solver, promotes school activities, is an idea-contributor, dependable, and exemplifies positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Character

The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good clean lifestyle.

The Faculty Council

The Faculty Council consists of five voting members. The council reviews procedures, selects new members, and considers disciplinary actions.

The Chapter Adviser, Miss Debra Ann DeSanto, is an ex-officio, non-voting member of the council.

Leadership

The leadership criterion is considered highly important for membership selection. The student who exercises leadership:

• Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility; conducts business effectively and efficiently; demonstrates reliability and dependability
• Leads in school or community activities, in the classroom, or at work
• Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities
• Is resourceful in proposing new ideas and making suggestions
• Exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals
• Contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school
• Exemplifies positive attitudes
• Inspires positive behavior in others
• Is willing to uphold scholarship and maintain a loyal school attitude

Character

A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities: respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship. In addition, the student of character:

• Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
• Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability)
• Upholds principles of morality and ethics
• Cooperates by complying with school regulations concerning property, programs, office, halls, etc.
• Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability
• Regularly shows courtesy, concern and respect for others
• Observes instructions and rules, is punctual and faithful both inside and outside the classroom
• Has powers of concentration, self-discipline and sustained attention, as shown by perseverance and application to studies
• Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others
• Actively helps rid the school of bad influences or environment
